Sydney starts on the North Shore, crosses the Harbour Bridge in its opening kilometres and finishes on the Opera House forecourt, after a late climb around Farm Cove that finds out tired legs.
The race begins on Miller Street in North Sydney, a start the organisers chose to honour the marathon of the 2000 Olympic Games, which also set off from the north side of the harbour. Within minutes the field is on the Harbour Bridge, on closed roads, and the climb onto the deck is one of the main rises of the race. Over the bridge the course works around the western side of the city centre and back to Barangaroo at about ten kilometres, then through The Rocks and up to the top of Macquarie Street.
From the city the route heads south-east to Taylor Square in Darlinghurst and out into the eastern suburbs, with an out-and-back along Anzac Parade towards Kingsford. This is the long middle of the race, and much of it is run twice: Driver Avenue in Moore Park and Taylor Square both come round a second time on the way home. Between those two visits is a loop of Centennial Park, from around 30 to 34 kilometres, on roads the city's runners know from weekend training. The line on the map shows where the course meets itself again.
After Taylor Square for the second time, the course passes Hyde Park and then, near 40 kilometres, makes its last climb up Art Gallery Road to Mrs Macquarie's Chair, the headland in the Royal Botanic Garden that looks across Farm Cove to the Opera House and the bridge. It is downhill from there, back along Macquarie Street to the forecourt. Sydney ran its first race as a World Marathon Major in 2025, the first in the southern hemisphere, and both course records fell that day: Hailemaryam Kiros ran 2:06:06 and Sifan Hassan 2:18:22.
Questions
Which parts of the Sydney course are run twice?
Driver Avenue in Moore Park, Taylor Square in Darlinghurst and Macquarie Street each come up twice, once on the way out to the eastern suburbs and again on the way back towards the harbour.
Where is the hardest part of the course?
The rise on Art Gallery Road to Mrs Macquarie's Chair, near 40 kilometres, which the organisers single out because it comes so late. The climb onto the Harbour Bridge in the first few kilometres is the other notable ascent.
Can I add my finishing time?
Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so your name, your finishing time and your club all fit. The 2026 course and its distance are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.
Is this an official Sydney Marathon print?
No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the organisers of the Sydney Marathon; the name says which course is mapped. The course is drawn from a route file we use with permission.
Can I change the map?
Yes. The designer opens with the course drawn and the map framed around it. Move the map if you like, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.
