The Brighton Marathon route, printed

The 2025 course, 42.195 km, from Preston Park, Brighton.

A landscape map artwork of the Brighton Marathon course: the route drawn as a coral line from Preston Park down through the city, out along the seafront towards Rottingdean and back to the finish on the Hove seafront, on pale sea glass with the green Downs shaded above the town and the sea filling the lower half, and a sample name, the race day and the distance printed beneath.

Brighton's marathon was redrawn in 2023 to finish on Hove Lawns instead of Madeira Drive, and the course now runs from Withdean to the Ovingdean cliffs and back along almost the whole seafront.

The race leaves Preston Park and heads away from the sea first: up Preston Park Avenue, down Preston Drove and north along London Road towards Withdean, before turning back into the city. By mile five runners are passing the Theatre Royal and the Royal Pavilion, then rounding The Level and climbing St James's Street into Kemptown. The organisers count four real climbs and put them all before mile eleven. The longest is the steady pull along Marine Drive to the U-turn at Ovingdean, where the cliffs open out to the west and the city sits at the far end of them.

Halfway comes on the way back, above Brighton Marina, and then the course drops to the seafront for its loudest stretch. Aquarium Junction is where the crowd is deepest. From mile fifteen Madeira Drive is lined with charity cheer points on an out-and-back beside Volk's Electric Railway, with Brighton Pier, the Grand Hotel, the i360 and the Peace Statue in view. The route then runs past Hove Lawns once, well before it finishes there, and turns inland up Grand Avenue and along Church Road, where Hove residents set out sweets and signs and, if the weather allows, barbecues.

The first Brighton Marathon was run on 18 April 2010, set up by the former international athlete Tim Hutchings and local runner Tom Naylor, and for years it finished on Madeira Drive by the pier. When the original operator went into administration in late 2022, London Marathon Events bought it and announced a new route a month before the 2023 race. The stretch out through Shoreham Port went, and so did the old finish. The last miles now run along Kingsway and the Hove promenade, past the beach huts and Hove Plinth, to the line on Hove Lawns.

Questions

Why does the line double back on itself along the seafront?

The course has two turnarounds on the coast: the U-turn at Ovingdean on the clifftop, and an out-and-back along Madeira Drive beside Volk's Electric Railway. Hove adds its own loop inland on Grand Avenue and Church Road before Kingsway brings runners back to the finish.

Does this course still go out to Shoreham?

No. The run through Shoreham Port was dropped when the route was redrawn for 2023, and this 2025 course turns back in Hove, finishing on Hove Lawns rather than Madeira Drive.

Can I add my finishing time?

Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so your name, your finishing time and your club all fit. The 2025 course and its distance are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.

Is this an official Brighton Marathon print?

No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the organisers of the Brighton Marathon; the name says which course is mapped. The course is drawn from a route file we use with permission.

Can I change the map?

Yes. The designer opens with the course drawn and the map framed around it. Move the map if you like, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.

How much does a race route print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
