Honolulu sets off at five in the morning to fireworks on Ala Moana Boulevard, runs through the city's Christmas lights in the dark, and keeps its finish open until the last walker arrives.
Most of the field starts long before sunrise. The first miles head through downtown along Honolulu Harbor past Aloha Tower, turn into Chinatown and come back along South King Street past Iolani Palace, Kawaiahao Church and city hall, where the Christmas lights are up for December. Then the course turns east, back along Ala Moana Boulevard past the shopping centre and over the Ala Wai Canal into Waikiki. The hotels line Kalakaua Avenue on one side and the beach runs along the other, still in darkness for much of the field.
Past the zoo and Kapiolani Park the road climbs around Diamond Head crater, then drops into Kahala. From there the course becomes a long run out along Kalanianaole Highway, through Waialae Iki, Aina Haina and Niu Valley, to a loop in Hawaii Kai beneath Koko Head, close to Hanauma Bay. It turns for home at Maunalua Bay. This is the stretch that decides how the day goes. By the time most runners are heading back towards Kahala the sun is well up, and the highway offers little shade.
Diamond Head comes round again in the last couple of miles, this time on the ocean side, before the course runs along Kalakaua Avenue past Sans Souci Beach and the Waikiki Aquarium to the finish near the Kapiolani Park bandstand. There is no cut-off time: the organisers let everyone finish as long as they keep moving, and walkers are welcome. Jack Scaff started the race in 1973 with the Honolulu Marathon Clinic, and thousands of runners now fly in from Japan for it each December.
Questions
Is there a time limit on the Honolulu course?
No. The organisers keep the finish open for every participant who keeps moving, and walkers are welcome, which is rare among marathons of this size.
Where is the hardest part of the course?
The long return along Kalanianaole Highway from Hawaii Kai, followed by the second climb around Diamond Head at about mile 24. Both come after sunrise, when the morning has warmed up.
Can I add my finishing time?
Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so your name, your finishing time and your club all fit. The 2026 course and its distance are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.
Is this an official Honolulu Marathon print?
No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the organisers of the Honolulu Marathon; the name says which course is mapped. The course is drawn from a route file we use with permission.
Can I change the map?
Yes. The designer opens with the course drawn and the map framed around it. Move the map if you like, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.
How much does a race route print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
