The Marathon Eryri route, printed

The 2025 course, 42.195 km, from Llanberis, Gwynedd.

A landscape map artwork of the Marathon Eryri course: the route drawn as a coral line in one big loop from Llanberis over the passes and round the mountains of Snowdonia, on pale ground with the peaks shaded in sage green, the lakes in pale blue and the valley roads in black, and a sample name, the race day and the distance printed beneath.

Marathon Eryri runs clockwise round Yr Wyddfa on roads and farm tracks, climbing to Pen-y-Pass in its first five miles and to Bwlch y Groes in its last five.

The race starts just outside Llanberis at half past ten and goes straight uphill. The A4086 climbs past Nant Peris and up the Llanberis Pass, between the crags, to the top at Pen-y-Pass, about 1,100 feet up. From there the course drops to the Pen-y-Gwryd junction and leaves the main road for the old road towards the campsite, around two kilometres of downhill farm track before it returns to tarmac. A short, steep climb lifts runners back to the main road at the campsite, and then the long descent of Nant Gwynant carries them down to Beddgelert, at about 200 feet.

The race was first run in 1982 as the Snowdonia Marathon. A local man, Ken Jones, had been inspired by the first London Marathon the year before and worked with its founders, John Disley and Chris Brasher, to set it up. He ran it again in 1983 and then handed it to the National Trust, which organised it until 2007, when it no longer had the resources to carry on. People from the surrounding villages formed a non-profit company to keep it going, and in 2023 the race took its Welsh name, Marathon Eryri. It is held in late October.

From Beddgelert the course turns north on the A4085, through Rhyd Ddu under the western flank of Yr Wyddfa and down to Waunfawr. Out of Waunfawr the route climbs quickly to Bwlch y Groes at about 1,200 feet, higher than Pen-y-Pass, with a short stretch on an unsurfaced track near the top. After the climb there is nothing left but the descent, steep and long, back down into Llanberis and the finish.

Questions

Is any of the course off road?

Two short parts. About two kilometres of downhill farm track on the old road after the Pen-y-Gwryd junction, and a brief unsurfaced section on the climb to Bwlch y Groes. Everything else is tarmac.

Which way round Yr Wyddfa does the course go?

Clockwise. It leaves Llanberis east up the pass, turns south to Beddgelert, heads north again through Rhyd Ddu to Waunfawr, and crosses Bwlch y Groes back to Llanberis, so the mountain is on the runners' right for the whole lap.

Can I add my finishing time?

Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so your name, your finishing time and your club all fit. The 2025 course and its distance are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.

Is this an official Marathon Eryri print?

No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the organisers of the Marathon Eryri; the name says which course is mapped. The course is drawn from a route file we use with permission.

Can I change the map?

Yes. The designer opens with the course drawn and the map framed around it. Move the map if you like, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.

How much does a race route print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
