The 2022 sportive loop from Oudenaarde through the Flemish Ardennes, from the Muur at Geraardsbergen to the Koppenberg, Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg, ridden the day before the professionals' Tour of Flanders.
The route starts and finishes in Oudenaarde, the town on the Scheldt where the Tour of Flanders has finished since 2012, and spends its first half heading east through the valleys of the Zwalm. The cobbles arrive early: the flat sector of Haaghoek at around 47 kilometres, then the Berendries a few kilometres later. At around 72 kilometres the route crosses the Markt in Geraardsbergen and climbs the Muur, the cobbled street that rises through the town to the chapel at the top of the Oudenberg.
Turning back west through Everbeek and Schorisse, the second half crowds the famous climbs together. The Eikenberg comes at about 109 kilometres, then the Koppenberg out of Melden, followed closely by the cobbles of Steenbeekdries and the Taaienberg. Above Ronse the route takes the Kanarieberg and the Kruisberg towards Hotond before the two climbs that settle the professional race: the Oude Kwaremont, about 2.2 kilometres of cobbles up from Kerkhove, and the Paterberg, only 360 metres long but averaging close to 13 per cent, at around 166 kilometres. From its top it is roughly 13 kilometres back to Oudenaarde.
We Ride Flanders is held on the Saturday before the race, which in 2022 meant 2 April, and it uses the same lanes and climbs the professionals tackle the next day. The Tour of Flanders itself was first run in 1913, and around 16,000 places on the sportive are usually taken long before the weekend. The climbs are short, and the difficulty lies in how close together they come and in the rough setts underneath. On the map the loop is a tangle of lanes around the town, crossing back over itself again and again.
