The car-free 2022 ride through all five boroughs of New York, from Lower Manhattan up through Central Park to the Bronx, across Queens and Brooklyn and over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island.
The 2022 ride began in Lower Manhattan and ran north up Sixth Avenue into Central Park, out along the East Drive and on through Harlem by Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. The Madison Avenue Bridge carried riders briefly into the Bronx, and the Third Avenue Bridge brought them straight back over the Harlem River. Then came a long, quick run south on the Harlem River Drive and the FDR Drive, roads normally given over entirely to cars, to the upper level of the Queensboro Bridge.
In Queens the route looped through Astoria and down Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City before the Pulaski Bridge crossed Newtown Creek into Brooklyn. From Greenpoint it ran through Williamsburg and past DUMBO, then joined the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Gowanus towards Bay Ridge. The climb onto the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, at around 57 kilometres, is the longest drag of the day, with the harbour and the Manhattan skyline behind the riders. On Staten Island, Bay Street led to the finish festival at St George, beside the ferry home.
The tour began on 12 June 1977 as the Five Boro Challenge, when 250 riders made the trip with a single rest stop. Today it is run by the nonprofit Bike New York, which uses it to fund free bike education. It is a tour rather than a race, with no clock and no winners. The 2022 edition on 1 May was the first back at full size after the pandemic, with about 32,000 riders. Drawn on the map, it is the rare route to touch all five boroughs, stitched together by five bridges.
