The one housewarming gift nobody else will bring
Candles, a plant and a bottle of something are what a new house collects in its first week. A map of the street is different, because it has their front door on it and could not have been bought for anybody else. It suits a first home most of all, when the address itself still feels like an achievement. It works just as well for a family who have moved across the country and are still learning which way the park is.
What to write on it
The big line can be the place, the address or the family name. The smaller line carries the welcome, or says since when.
- HARROGATE WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
- OUR FIRST HOME KEYS COLLECTED MAY 2026
- NUMBER TWELVE HOME SINCE 2026
- THE HARRISONS NEW ADDRESS, SAME CHAOS
Buying for somebody else? The month they got the keys is the detail people like most, and a year alone is enough if you are not sure of it.
Edge to edge, in Sage & ink
A new home is really about what surrounds it: the walk to school, the corner shop, the pub they have not tried yet. So we suggest the Edge to edge border, which runs the map across the whole sheet and gives the neighbourhood as much room as the paper has. Keep the view close, a few roads either side of the house, so their own road is easy to find.
Sage & ink is the style we would start with: black linework on a pale ground with soft blue water. It is calm enough for a hallway and will not argue with whatever colour the walls end up. The map carries no printed street names, only your words, so it reads as a picture and not as a page torn from an atlas.
A worked example
Say friends have just moved to Harrogate. Look up the town, pull the map across to their road and zoom until the house sits among the routes they will use every day. Put the pin on the house, write HARROGATE with WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD beneath it, and ask for a preview.
You are shown the finished print and pay only once you are happy with it. Give their address at checkout and it is delivered to them, or have it sent to you so you can hand it over at the door.
And for the house they are leaving
The same idea runs the other way. A map of the street somebody is moving away from, titled with the years they lived there, is a kind way to say goodbye to a house. Parents who are downsizing tend to get this one from their children.
